The water problem in Armenia
2 m. | 2024-03-28T he water crisis stands as one of the principal challenges confronting humanity in the contemporary world. Water scarcity presently impacts over 40 percent of the global population. According to UNICEF, half of the world's population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by as early as 2025. Some 700 million people could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030.
Interestingly, water scarcity isn't confined to regions traditionally associated with it. It can occur even in areas with seemingly abundant water resources due to various factors such as climate change, infrastructure collapse, contamination, conflict, or mismanagement.
Armenia presents a unique case study in this regard. In the territory of the Republic of Armenia, approximately 9,500 large and small rivers flow, with a total length of 23,000 km. Additionally, Armenia boasts around 100 lakes, including the largest lake in the Caucasus, Lake Sevan.
Despite Armenia's relatively abundant water resources, the country has not escaped the grips of the water crisis. In Armenia's case, this crisis stems not only from global warming but also from mismanagement.
Afterwards, the infographic will present the primary directions and numerical data concerning the water issue in Armenia.
